Reducing logistics costs is a key objective for almost all of our customers. Logistics cooperations can be another key.

Your own logistics is regularly and thoroughly put to the test and processes are constantly improved. But what do you do when internal optimisation is almost complete and there is little room for improvement? A seldom-used cost-cutting option is to share logistics with other companies, even competitors – in whole or in part – by forming logistics cooperatives.

Unlocking synergies through logistics collaboration

Under the right conditions, the joint handling of warehousing and transport processes can generate significant synergies. This raises many questions, both for the manufacturer, the cooperating companies and the logistics service providers.

Typical questions for logistics collaborations

  • Which company would be a suitable partner for logistics cooperation? (e.g. with similar structures, philosophies, standards,…)
  • Are there different regional cooperation partners?
  • What synergy potential in warehousing and/or transport seems realistic?
  • Which service providers are suitable for carrying out joint logistics?
  • What are the terms and conditions of suitable service providers for handling the cooperation volume?
  • How can the joint savings be shared transparently and fairly among the participants?

Logistics co-operation services

  • Quantification of synergy potential
  • Development of joint logistics structures between cooperation partners / service providers
  • Simulation of changed framework conditions (e.g. shifting of delivery days, synchronisation of delivery
  • windows, synchronisation of route plans)
  • Role of neutral arbiter in transparent and fair sharing of synergies (regular process, e.g. quarterly)
  • Running tenders (joint procurement of services)
  • Supporting the expansion of the cooperation network

The aim of cross-company cooperation is always to achieve synergy effects in the form of cost savings or quality advantages. By bundling volumes, enormous savings can often be realised. For example, by making better use of the service provider’s resources, it is possible to save kilometres in the transport sector, since the number of customer stops or journeys to a customer area can be significantly reduced. Many small deliveries are consolidated into a few larger ones.

Collaboration requires sensitive data about customers, costs, quantities and prices. This can be a major obstacle to successful collaboration. As an external logistics consultant, ORGAPLAN Logistik GmbH records all relevant information confidentially and uses this data to calculate the actual synergy potential achieved at agreed intervals and its fair monetary distribution among the cooperation partners.
